'She is the spirit of the doorway leading out' pays homage to the Trickster archetype whose role in mythologies around the world and throughout history has been to shake up stagnant situations with chaos; shining light on alternative ways of doing or being and to bring humour into life. I began making this work ten months ago while living in Central Australia and continued working on it in many make-shift studios while living on the road and travelling throughout Australia. During this time I was acutely aware of the Trickster's hand in my own existence, while experiencing set-backs or way-laid plans I brought my attention to my belief that the chaos of the unexpected would most likely have positive results in the end. An open doorway is a new beginning, a possibility and a journey into the unknown.
We will sit and we will wait and soon, our wounds will be clean. 2016-17
This work is a banner for when inaction is the only option; inspired by the week I spent holed up in a room recovering from a series of minor motorbike crashes with my ex-boyfriend. It was an exhausted end to months of moving. Our tropically infected wounds were the physical expression of our relationship - an oozing mess. During this time my boyfriend focused on the computer game Monkey Island Two and I obsessively drew alternate realities and from these drawings this banner has come.
